  “What are you doing out here?” asked the one with the rifle.

  “Thanks,” Elijah said, opening the door for her. She walked inside and turned to see Caleb giving his twin brother a disapproving look. Elijah grinned and led Lucy into their gloriously appointed kitchen. The exposed wood continued throughout the house with high ceilings and exposed beams.   Lucy sat at the kitchen island bench and watched Elijah put water in a kettle on the huge gas stove. “What was bothering you so much that you got yourself lost?” he asked. When the kettle whistled, he took it off the stove and poured her a cup of sweet-smelling herbal tea.

He flipped it over and slid it onto a plate just as toast popped from the chrome toaster. He pulled out the sourdough and slathered it with strawberry jam before passing the plate to Lucy.
